Xiao Zhong (小種)

The first place you may encounter the name Xiao Zhong is in the name given to much of the black tea produced in Wuyishan: Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong (正山小种). This name means "small leaf varietal from the original mountain". There is a specific definition of the original mountain, which involves the mountains surrounding Tongmu in the nature preserve.

Xiao Zhong, the small leaf varietal, is the only commercially produced tea in Wuyishan that is not a cultivar, but grown from seed. Since each tree is a little different, you see rows but not hedges. Some trees tend to grow taller, and others wider or shorter.
