Ma Tou Yan Rou Gui
马头岩肉桂
My first session with this Ma Tou Yan Rou gui was fantastic, the tea "got stuck in my head" like a song long after I finished drinking. The production here is not at all traditional for this tea; it is from my friend who strives to produce interesting teas.
Very floral lid fragrance, the soup is bright like a sour peach. This tea is like a wuyi impression of dan cong: it has that clarity of fragrance, slightly thinner soup. Unlike dan cong this tea brews like yancha. While long steeps will become bitter, they will be rich and energetic.
I have tried this tea in both a gaiwan and a favorite clay pot. While both were enjoyable I found the gaiwan a clear winner which let the fragrance shine.
