Comfortable Rou Gui

Early in the summer I visited the Tian Geng factory in Wuyishan. I have been friends with the family for many years but never had cause to visit their factory–it was a fun visit and we picked out some excellent teas to share in our shop and in this club issue. I enjoyed the 2021 harvest of this tea, which was featured in the club a couple of years ago and thought it would be fun to get the 2023 harvest as well.
This family is particularly good at producing teas with a “creamy” character. Many of their teas are a bit lighter than I prefer, but nonetheless are well processed and interesting. We have translated the name of this tea in English as “Comfortable Rou Gui”. Our friends named the tea “Zi Zai” (自在), which means free, unrestrained, comfortable, or at ease. This is a tea that is comfortably rou gui and can perform well in a variety of situations. I have had positive experiences with all 9g in a normal gaiwan, 6-7g in a small gaiwan or teapot, or a few grams in a large glass.
